In Land Rover guise, the engine must also be able to run at acute angles for extreme off-road
use. A 217-hp 4.6-liter V8 is the sole engine, a 4-speed automatic the only transmission. All-wheel drive with low-range gearing and traction control is standard. The system gains a driver-activated center differential that locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque split for enhanced off-road traction. Dropped for '04 is Land Rover's Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), which used hydraulic suspension levers to reduce body lean in turns. Test SEs averaged 11.5-13.3 mpg, depending on driving conditions. Premium fuel required.
